Here’s a welcome post on the (in)famous Burrows cave from the Ohio Archaeology blog (HT: Jason Colavito on Twitter). I’ve gotten a number of inquiries over the years about its “ancient inscriptions” and other items that allegedly prove the Phoenicians (or Lost Tribes of Israel) came to America in antiquity.
The author of the post is Brad Lepper, the curator of archaeology at the Ohio Historical Society. Lepper links from this post to another article of his in the Columbus Dispatch for good measure. Check out both if Burrows is new to you or you’ve heard about it before and had only one side of the story presented.
The post ends with links to learn more about the Burrows’ Cave chicanery.
There’s some “classy” replies on the Falling Into Burrows Cave site. I never understood how proving a religion incorrect involve calling them names.
Mike, Dave Hubbard & Paul Schaffranke present themselves as linguists and collectors of coins, stamps & artifacts. They say the Dead Sea Scrolls have English syntax & were planted in vermillion sheep skin instead of papyrus ? Comments on DSS or Dave & Paul ? There was also mention of ancient writing seen on photos of the Roswell aircraft debris(they held up a book photo). Respectfully, TT
That’s hilarious — every part of it. Pure idiocy with respect to the scrolls (they weren’t written on papyrus, either — they can’t even get the material they’re denying right!). But the worst part is that so many people would never check the claims and are so ignorant of the circumstances and publications of the items mentioned (sans Roswell glyphs – there has never been any photo of “glyphs” on them – they were drawn from memory by Jesse Marcel). In other words, there is no actual artifact recovered from Roswell with glyphs on it — though you’ll find plenty of recreations online. Marcel said he saw symbols on pieces of wreckage and tried to reproduce some from memory. They’ve since taken on a life of their own.
