Here’s the picture (yes, it’s real so far as I know). Strange indeed, and looks artificial. You can read about the image here and get some close-ups. I’ll look forward to NASA’s response.

Thanks for the image! It seems quite unnatural, and clearly metallic and hemispherical, supported by specular highlights and shape. What is also interesting are the apparent obits to the right. A snaking line leading to what looks like a smaller version of the domed structure. I wonder if NASA has sent the rover there…
we’ll see; I’m naturally skeptical of it. But if it’s a real rover image, NASA needs to explain it.
…OR the “dome” is the broken half of a garden-variety round-ish stone, presumably one of the most common shapes for random non-artificial objects in the universe. And the “hut’s” “door” is a garden-variety lumpy-ish stone with one side fractured and throwing a shadow over the side not facing the sun.
We’re basically looking at a Martian Rohrschach blot and imposing alien fantasies on it. Remember “The Face on Mars”? Remember the “Martian Pyramid”? Remember how they evaporated when we got better, closer cameras pointed at them?
If the supposed highly-advanced “aliens” who own this little red campground are literally within stumbling distance, why haven’t they stopped by to say howdy to the rover’s camera during the past several years?
Conversely, if they don’t want to be seen, why did they pitch their campground literally only a few steps away our rover?
And if they all died long, long ago, why is their tent/hut still standing?
What is R2-D2 doing on Mars? Those StarWars producers are really going to great lengths to promote the new movie.
funny!
Or, maybe we’re looking at evidence that “The Martian” was actually based on true, classified events! 🙂
I find it easier to believe that rock domes (like, maybe, in Yosemite) are an electrical-discharge phenomena than an artificial construct by an alien race. To wit:

..And if that interests you, run this video up to 1:20:36:

I mean… if it’s really between believing in extraterrestrials and a Hannes Alfven view of nature…
I’m still waiting for NASA to comment (I assume it’s a real rover picture – anyone else know otherwise?).
I think you meant “rather than” an artificial construct by an alien race.
Stories about this only seem to be coming up on fringe web sites. They look like high elevation observatories. Also reminds me of this copper domed winery I saw in Italy, 3 years ago:
